An Integrative Approach to Suicide in Complex Mental Illness (Virtual)

These training sessions are intended for front-line professionals. Through interactive discussions and case studies you will learn an integrative approach by employing CBT-p, DBT, and Mindfulness techniques; how to assess suicide risk of individuals living with complex mental illnesses (i.e. schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and other psychotic illnesses); and how to intervene and provide the support they need.
 
In these two sessions you will learn the following:
  1. Understanding suicide amongst people living with complex mental illnesses
  2. How to begin a conversation with individuals with suicidal ideation
  3. How to conduct a comprehensive suicide assessment through a bio-psycho-social-spiritual lens
  4. How to assess a person’s level of risk by identifying warning signs, risk factors, and safety measures
  5. Suicidal interventions and coping strategies informed by CBT-p, DBT, and Mindfulness

A Certificate of Completion will also be provided to attendees who complete the two-session training.

Meet the Facilitators:

Sophie Hwang, MSW, RSW, PhD (Ed.)
Sophie is the director of support and educational services and the cognitive behavioural therapy for psychosis training lead at IAM. She provides support and services to individuals and family members who are impacted by a broad range of psychotic illnesses, including schizophrenia. She also developed and delivers IAM's Recovery in Action CBT group for individuals living with psychosis. She received her CBT training from the University of Toronto and the Beck Institute. A registered social worker, Sophie has an MSW from York University and an MEd in Counselling Psychology and a PhD in Education from the University of Toronto.
